As the years go by, I keep deepening the respect I have for these wonderful beings with whom we are privileged to share our lives. Dogs are different from, but not less than ourselves, and deserve the same level of respect, compassion and understanding which we would give to other humans. Training techniques used at Yellow Brick Road are designed to maximize the communication and understanding between owner and dog and look for that magic "meeting point" which allows maximum freedom for the dog and meets the lifestyle needs of the human.
Humans and dogs differ from one another cognitively, but emotionally we are pretty much the same. If we are nervous, insecure "parents", our dogs will be insecure as well. This can manifest as fearfulness or aggression, depending upon the dog's individual temperament. Establishing a strong bond with the dog, creating a relationship of mutual respect and caring is at the core of our training method. All obedience is built upon this foundation.
Our training style is similar to the techniques of Cesar Millan ("The Dog Whisperer") whom we had the amazing good fortune of training with back in 2002 and 2003 during 5 separate 5-hour workshops. We've found that Cesar's basic recipe of "exercise, discipline, and affection" and setting "rules, boundaries, and limitations" helps to give dogs what they need to become well-balanced family members. By incorporating many of his ideas into our own philosophy and style, we've developed a training method which we believe is easy for dog owners to understand and put into practice in their daily lives.
Although we do offer private in-home training, we encourage people to first try out our free handler class (information below) to see how much we might be able to modify problem behavior in that environment. If more intervention is required, we can always set up personal training afterwards.
Free Handler Class Every Saturday at 4:00, we host a group class in Sunnyglenn Park in Torrance. (Corner of Del Amo and Redbeam, 1 block east of Prospect.) There is no charge for this class, and anyone is welcome to attend, regardless of their dog's training history. We do not teach obedience in this class. Its purpose is to improve the owner/dog bond by increasing the owner's confidence and helping the dog learn to relax and concentrate on his owner's commands in the presence of distractions.
This is a "drop-in" class, designed to support the needs of each participant in the group. The only "rules" we have are: 1) pick up after your dog, 2) keep your dog on leash, and 3) before and during class, please restrain your dog from approaching other dogs, since many of the dogs who attend the class are there because they have issues with other dogs on leash.
If you would like to join us, just show up at the park at 4:00. For additional information, feel free to call us at (310) 606-5507.
Pack walk at Sunnyglen Park
One of the exercises we do in class involves steps from the Virgina Reel! This gives dogs and owners a fun way to practice direct approach from a dog they don't know.
